Exhibiting for the first time in Sherborne Guy Taplin will be showing the carved driftwood birds for which he is known and sought after by collectors.  This exhibition is being held in association with Messum's Gallery, London. Taplin’s bird sculptures embody our longed-for harmony with the natural world.  His obsession with birds extends beyond their beauty to their endurance, intuition and symbolic loyalty.  Each bird is cleverly composed to capture their specific habits and character.  His simplified, stylised forms seem to breathe each bird’s very essence.  Sculpted from found driftwood, which he forages from coasts and estuaries around the world, Taplin’s birds are therefore enriched by previous lives.

This delightful exhibition of 40 paintings is composed mainly of landscapes alongside interiors and still lives for which Maddison has a long-established reputation.  Much of the subject matter concentrates around the fascinating medieval city of Norwich with its many historical buildings such as Pull’s Ferry and Bishop Bridge.  Maddison has recently moved to an old house just outside the City walls which is the focus for many of his interiors.   His eye is drawn to the simplicity that every-day objects can possess in a pictorial composition and the appeal of his interiors lies in the clarity of his compositions.

2nd  -  22nd December 2017

Our Christmas exhibition shows work from our current stable of artists along with pictures and sculpture by artists who are showing for the first time in our Gallery.  This gives us the opportunity to introduce both new artists and styles to the Gallery.
